Some characters remain in a serial for so long that they effectively become part of its foundation, a legacy presence whose history stretches back further than most of the current audience has actually been watching. Writing for a legacy character means honouring accumulated history while still finding genuinely new material.
This balancing act grows harder with time, since every new storyline has to account for decades of established relationships, past decisions and prior storylines that a long time audience will remember clearly, even when newer viewers arrive without that same accumulated context or knowledge of earlier seasons.
