Watching a show while simultaneously discussing it on a separate device has become such a common habit that it now functions almost like a companion activity in its own right. A phone in hand during an episode is often less a distraction than a direct line to friends watching the exact same thing elsewhere.
This parallel conversation changes the texture of a communal experience even when nobody is physically in the same room. Reactions can be shared instantly, jokes and theories exchanged in real time, recreating much of the energy of a shared living room without requiring anyone to actually be present in one.
What makes this habit endure is the same underlying instinct that has always shaped television viewing: the desire for company while watching. Technology simply gave that old instinct a new, more flexible channel, one that works just as well across a city as it does across a single sofa.
