The Algorithm's Genre Bubble and How It Forms

Recommendation systems learn quickly, sometimes too quickly, narrowing their suggestions toward whatever genre a viewer has recently watched most. A single binge of one particular kind of show can noticeably reshape an entire homepage within days, gradually crowding out genres a viewer might otherwise have been perfectly happy to encounter.
This creates a genuine tension between convenience and genuine discovery. The algorithm is very good at giving viewers more of exactly what they already like, but considerably less reliable at introducing something meaningfully different that a viewer did not already know to search for directly themselves.
Some viewers deliberately break the pattern, searching outside their usual genres specifically to reset what gets recommended afterward. It is a small, deliberate act of resistance against a system that otherwise, left entirely alone, tends to narrow rather than genuinely broaden a person's viewing habits over time.
