Sometimes a single episode of an established show is deliberately built to test whether a spin off concept might actually work, introducing new characters or a new setting within a familiar series before committing to an entirely separate production. This backdoor pilot lets a network gauge audience reaction with considerably reduced risk.
Because it has to function on two levels simultaneously, satisfying as a regular episode while also convincingly auditioning an entirely new premise, the backdoor pilot is a genuinely demanding format to execute well. A weak one can damage both the parent show and the spin off concept it was quietly testing.
Audiences do not always immediately recognise a backdoor pilot for what it actually is, though attentive fans often notice unusual emphasis placed on secondary characters or an unfamiliar setting given more attention than a single ordinary episode would typically justify on its own within the regular season.
