The Cliffhanger Just Before the Advertisement Break

Within a single daily episode, tension is often deliberately built toward a smaller, internal cliffhanger positioned right before an advertisement break, a technique distinct from the larger season ending cliffhanger and designed specifically to keep viewers from changing channels during the interruption that inevitably follows almost immediately afterward.

This internal structure requires careful pacing across an episode that might already be quite short, since writers have to build genuine tension multiple times within a single instalment rather than saving the technique for a single climactic moment at the very end of the entire broadcast that particular day.

Regular viewers become fluent in recognising these smaller internal cliffhangers, often anticipating exactly when one is likely to arrive based on an episode's overall rhythm. That familiarity does not particularly diminish the technique's actual effectiveness, since the anticipation itself has become part of the format's own accumulated, genuine pleasure.
