The Doppelganger Trope and Its Many Uses

Introducing a character's exact double, whether through disguise, coincidence or a more fantastical explanation, gives a serial an efficient way to explore what someone might do under different circumstances, or without their usual moral restraint, all while reusing an already established actor and an already recognisable face.
The device works particularly well for testing loyalty within a story, since other characters must decide whether they truly know someone well enough to detect a substitution before it is too late for the story's stakes to matter. Genuine confusion among characters translates naturally into rising tension for the audience.
Once resolved, the doppelganger plot often leaves a lasting residue of doubt behind it, a lingering question about how well anyone in the story can really claim to know another person completely, even those they have trusted closely and deeply across many previous seasons spent together.
